La place et la présence des Autochtones dans les villes suscitent depuis plusieurs années un vif intérêt de la part des chercheurs et des instances gouvernementales. Phénomène perçu et construit au départ comme un problème, une nouvelle production scientifique rend compte peu à peu des réalités plurielles des Autochtones des villes. La nécessité de repenser les approches, de questionner l’information existante et de redéfinir les concepts se fait donc sentir. Les études qui font autorité dans le domaine de l’urbanité des Autochtones mettent cependant davantage l’accent sur les dimensions sociologiques et politiques faisant souvent abstraction de la dimension historique de la présence autochtone dans les villes canadiennes et québécoises. Dans la mesure où nos formulations et représentations du passé déterminent nos perceptions et nos idées sur le présent, il est primordial de développer un cadre de réflexion afin de réinscrire l’Autochtone dans l’histoire urbaine et de cerner le vide historique devant lequel nous sommes placés. En nous appuyant sur des exemples concrets, notre étude se veut avant tout exploratoire. Elle propose de réinvestir le lieu de mémoire qu’est la ville afin de combler le déficit des connaissances en rassemblant les éléments d’un nouveau récit autochtone de l’urbanité. Cette histoire devrait ultimement favoriser l’émergence d’une nouvelle conscience citoyenne.
