Abstract
En raison de son caractère eurocentriste, le principal paradigme des démographes, la théorie de la transition et son avatar, la modernisation socioculturelle, conduit à des interprétations erronées des comportements en matière de fécondité et de famille. Mais même si l'on se situe dans ce paradigme, il faut abandonner la vision quasi évolutionniste du développement qui en découle au profit de l'analyse des conflits et des tensions. Visant une compréhension plus profonde de la démographie des pays en développement, l'auteur propose de construire une "démographie compréhensive", de nature interdisciplinaire, caractérisée par la diversification des outils de collecte des données et des niveaux d'analyse.
