Le présent article traite des constructions identitaires et du rôle des représentations dans ces élaborations. L'auteur présente les grands courants théoriques qui concernent l'identité et les représentations; il pose aussi les problèmes méthodologiques liés à leur saisie. Son étude démontre l'intérêt d'une approche plurielle, qui tente de saisir au plus près les représentations de leur futur métier d'élèves ingénieurs, dans une perspective diachronique par une approche comparative en début et fin de formation. Les résultats de recherche soutiennent qu'un même acteur est porteur d'identités diverses construites par l'identification à des groupes d'appartenance et mobilisées en fonction de la situation d'interaction ou de la représentation qu'il s'en fait et selon un processus d'identification par autrui.
