Les différentes recherches archéologiques entreprises au Nouveau-Québec et au Labrador depuis 1960 permettent d’esquisser un cadre spatiotemporel cohérent de la préhistoire de cette région. La péninsule semble insérée entre deux courants anciens de relations et de peuplements paléo-esquimaux : l’un à l’est, venant du Groenland et du nord-est de Baffin; l’autre à l’ouest, venant du bassin de Foxe. La zone intermédiaire paraît être une extension tardive de ces deux courants. Le Dorsétien et même le Thuléen s’y manifestent avec quelques différences d’un côté et de l’autre de la baie. Au nord-ouest de l’Ungava comme à l’est de la mer d’Hudson, le Dorsétien se prolonge jusqu’à la fin du XVe siècle, alors que les Thuléens semblent déjà installés dans ces régions. Entre les deux, le site Michea, au lac Payne, atteste une longue occupation ou une fréquentation assidue de l’intérieur des terres. Ceci dit, nous ignorons tout des relations qui ont existé entre ces régions. Les données disponibles sont encore difficiles à relier entre elles en raison d’approches théoriques différentes Le programme pluridisciplinaire Tuvaaluk, dans lequel les disciplines impliquées travaillent à des échelles comparables, devrait permettre d’obtenir un cadre paléoécologique régional contemporain de l’occupation humaine.
