This chapter focuses on the developmental biology of teeth and jaws of primate and human oral evolution. The developmental-genetic information about how teeth and jaws grow gives useful insights into how the structures evolve by identifying genetic and epigenetic sources of phenotypic changes. Contemporary evolutionary and developmental genetic studies of odontogenesis suggest that the mandible is influenced by, or responds to, the developing teeth. Osborn's “Clone Model” rested upon the theory of the intrinsic control of tooth formation and differentiation. While homeobox containing genes are vital to tooth and jaw morphogenesis, the absence of Hox gene expression does not seem requisite for development of the teeth as it is for the jaws. The fossil record shows an amazing amount of morphological diversity, from hyper-robust to highly gracile teeth and jaws that nonetheless develop in tandem to fit and function properly together as an animal grows.
