Abstract
La transformation d’une institution psychiatrique est toujours un défi et suppose un dialogue entre les acteurs sur le terrain préoccupés d’offrir de bons services et les acteurs gouvernementaux soucieux, en plus, d’un contrôle budgétaire. Ce dialogue est parfois absent et les crises font alors partie d’une évolution vers un temps meilleur. L’Hôpital Louis-H. Lafontaine a été l’objet de trois tutelles avant de s’acheminer vers le statut actuel d’institut universitaire en santé mentale. La première tutelle, qui ne porta pas ce nom, caractérise le passage d’une institution privée gérée par les religieuses à une institution publique avec ses aléas propres. Cette tranche d’histoire permet d’entrevoir comment pouvait s’effectuer à l’époque le questionnement des deux types d’acteurs sur le devenir d’un hôpital psychiatrique.
