L’histoire de l’hôpital Rivière-des-Prairies, de ses origines à nos jours, ressemble à l’histoire des institutions psychiatriques au Canada Français : elle en constitue un condensé sur près de 80 ans : histoire marquée par une alternance d’initiatives généreuses et d’évènements regrettables sinon de scandales intolérables avec néanmoins un aboutissement récent heureux dans un partenariat fructueux à l’Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal. À partir du cas institutionnel présenté, cette histoire nous invite à réfléchir sur la vulnérabilité de l’institution psychiatrique à la perversion de ses innovations.
