Abstract
The ideological, geographical, and disciplinary orientations in W.L. Morton's Manitoba: A History, Seymour Martin Lipset's Agrarian Socialism, and C.B. Macpherson's Democracy in Alberta offer divergent thematic entry points for the study of prairie politics. The rigorous research and graceful literary styles of Morton, Lipset, and Macpherson properly qualified their books as classics. In presenting readers with the idiosyncratic ideational environments of the specific province they examined, each author brought a distinctive mindset to fathoming prairie politics. The Prairies were a region of their minds. The historian Morton is presented as a Liberal-cum-Tory, the sociologist Lipset as a socialist-cum-liberal, and the political theorist Macpherson as a Marxist-cum-liberal idealist.
