The indigenous cultures and communities of North America are studied in many academic disciplines, geography among them.The number of geographers who work in this area is small compared to the figures that emerge from such departments as anthropology, history, or literature, mainly because geography itself is a small discipline.1 A surprisingly wide range of topics, methods, Robert Rundstrom is associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Oklahoma, Norman.He is a cultural geographer interested in landscape issues, place names, other aspects of cultural preservation, and the social implications of maps and geographic information systems.Douglas Deur is a doctoral candidate and lecturer in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge and is the current chair of the American Indian Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.His interests focus on traditional land and resource use among the tribes and First Nations of northwestern North America.Kate Berry is associate professor in the Department of Geography at the
