Durant son voyage d’études aux États-Unis, en vue d’écrire un livre commandé par les éditions Firmin-Didot, Paul de Rousiers, accompagné du photographe Georges Rivière, fait une brève incursion au Canada à la fin du mois de mai 1890, pour rencontrer son collègue canadien de la Science sociale Léon Gérin. Celui-ci leur fait visiter la paroisse de Saint-Justin où il s’exerce à ses premières observations de terrain, qui lui serviront ensuite à écrire L’Habitant de Saint-Justin , classique de la sociologie québécoise. Nous présentons ici quelques extraits de la correspondance échangée entre les deux hommes et en particulier les lettres écrites par P. de Rousiers à propos de ce qu’il appelle “ce curieux paysˮ.
