Abstract
Abstract: This paper examines whether the relation between spot and forward exchange rates is stable, and if not, the implications for international market conditions. We document structural breaks for the U.S. and U.K. currencies vis-à-vis the Canadian dollar. We consider two applications in an effort to determine the consequences of this structural change in international asset and goods markets. First, we find that the dynamic structure linking stock return volatility across countries is affected by change in the spot-forward relation, and second the elasticity of Canadian import demand with respect to spot exchange rates has also been affected by this change.
