Abstract

<em>Subversion</em> is a stance that questions, challenges, and transforms extant prevalent social dynamics, potentially mediated by interactive digital media. Here, we discuss this approach, drawing across disciplinary boundaries (Design, Human–Computer Interaction, and the Maker Movement), illustrated with three design examples. Our aim is to draw into focus the following three aspects of design: (i) looking to cultural artifacts for inspiration, (ii) fabrication approaches that emphasize repurposing and rearrangement of technologies, and (iii) critical reflection.
