Abstract
This article focuses on tertiary linguistic and intercultural education in the context of a French as a second language teacher training course in Canada. Traditional linguistic and socio-cultural competence developments aiming at preparedness for diverse student populations are no longer able to encompass the large array of diversified backgrounds from which student populations originate. In the light of today’s influx of newcomers to Canada who often are not familiar with either of the country’s official languages, English or French, innovative ways to see to linguistic education are a must. Countries in the European Union are facing similar challenges already and will be faced with the same intercultural questions in the immediate future. In the new knowledge economy of the global village, key components are “community, innovation and creativity” and these are the parameters underlying course delivery, with the objective of increasing awareness and promoting openness to change.
