SUMMARY: Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after tobacco smoking. The NH Environmental Public Health Tracking Program (NH EPHT) selected radon and lung cancer as a priority issue and is developing related tracking indicators for these main reasons: 1) New Hampshire lung cancer rates are consistently at or above the national average; 2) due to its geology, potential exposure to radon in New Hampshire is greater than the national average; 3) long-term radon exposure leads to the deaths of an estimated 100 residents each year in New Hampshire; and 4) an estimated one-quarter million New Hampshire homes remain untested for radon even though testing is inexpensive and can prevent these deaths. In the Winter 2008 issue of the NH EPHT newsletter, The Tracker, we described associations between elevated indoor radon levels and lung cancer incidence in New Hampshire. This issue brief describes geographic variations in radon exposure risk and radon testing behavior in New Hampshire homes.
