Parmi les minorités religieuses et nationales avec lesquelles le catholicisme canadien de langue française est entré en contact au tournant du XXe siècle, peu ont soulevé autant de débats et de réticences que les adeptes du judaïsme. Cela tenait à que les Juifs comptaient parmi les rares populations immigrantes non-chrétiennes au pays, et à ce que la théologie catholique maintenait des réserves très sérieuses quant à l’opportunité d’entretenir des relations suivies avec le fils et les filles d’Israël. Malgré les jugements négatifs émis par les élites cléricales de langue française, les Canadiens français d’origine modeste ont eu souvent l’occasion de rencontrer des Juifs dans différents contextes sociaux, particulièrement dans le commerce de détail et dans l’industrie du vêtement. L’article retrace dans ses grandes lignes l’histoire de l’immigration juive est-européenne au Canada francophone et décrit la place que les marchands et les entrepreneurs de cette origine ont occupé, autant à la campagne qu’à la ville. L’auteur distingue aussi entre l’évolution de cette question au Québec à proprement parler et au sein des minorités de langue française ailleurs au pays, puis montre que le principal obstacle à des échanges plus suivis entre les deux groupes tenait plus à des questions confessionnelles que linguistiques.
