Abstract
<em><strong>Abstract</strong></em> This paper reports on the state of the physical education profession in Canada. Professional physical educators have long been integral staff members in both the public and private education systems as well as in the teacher education programs within the universities. Despite the absence of a national policy to which provinces and territories are accountable, physical educators in Canada are increasingly better prepared due, in part, to strict requirements for enrolment into pre-service teacher education programs and the presence of comprehensive training programs for in-service teachers. The physical education profession in Canada has undergone a remarkable transformation since the mid-1800s; yet, several issues and challenges in the physical education profession remain and could benefit from innovations and future research.
