A System for Treating Discharged Soils in Deep Mixing Method with High-pressure Injection

Abstract
In applying the deep mixing method with high-pressure injection as ground improvement, excess soils containing cement are sometimes discharged at the ground surface, when cement slurry milk is mixed into the ground in-situ. In particular, as pressurized water jet or compressed air is used in the high-pressure injection method for cutting the ground, a significant quantity of discharged soils is generated during the implementation. From the viewpoint of environmental impact, it might be indispensable to reduce the discharged soils in volume before disposing them as industrial wastes. The authors have developed a treatment system to reduce the volume of such discharged soils and have applied it in experimental fields. In this system, a liquid coagulant is mixed with discharged soils and then pore water is removed through compressed process. The system, therefore, consists of an equipment to make the liquid coagulant, a mixer to add it to discharged soils, and a vibratory separator or press units. The system can treat about 100 m 3 of discharged soils per day, and its performance and applicability were confirmed in field tests, followed by verifying its effectiveness in practice. This treatment system makes it possible to reduce half the volume of discharged soils generated during implementation of the deep mixing method with high-pressure injection, followed by lessening volume of industrial wastes and contributing to reduce environmental impact.
