Abstract
Les contributions de l’Église catholique sont nombreuses en ce qui a trait aux communautés minoritaires de langue française de l’Amérique du Nord, mais qu’en est-il de l’historiographie? La production historique de langue française en Amérique du Nord nous permet de constater que les membres du clergé forment la majorité des auteurs de la première heure. Cet article porte sur le rôle du clergé dans l’émergence d’une réflexion historique de langue française en milieu minoritaire avec, comme moment charnière, la fondation de la Société historique du Nouvel-Ontario en 1942. Nous nous intéresserons au rôle du clergé à titre de membres et d’auteurs en ciblant plus particulièrement les contributions de Lorenzo Cadieux et Stéphane Côté au cours des premières années d’existence de la Société. En rattachant cette production historique à l’historiographie régionale, nous chercherons à mieux comprendre l’émergence d’un discours à saveur identitaire, par l’entremise des références au passé, au cours des premières années d’existence de la Société.
