Abstract

The explosive population growth of cities in Alberta from 1996 to 2001 is explained by analyzing the sources of that growth. In contrast to the role played by international migration to the largest cities of Canada, the expansion of Edmonton and Calgary during this period has occurred primarily as the result of interprovincial migration. These two cities, but Calgary in particular, play a new intermediate role as arriviste cities in the national urban hierarchy which is the product of both upward and downward movement in that hierarchy.
