Canada's Electricity Infrastructure: Building a Case for Investment

Abstract
This report covers the current state of the national electric energy infrastructure in Canada and analyses future investments. It also reviews the electricity generation, transmission and distribution investment plans of each province and compares them to future energy demands. Export targets and environmental regulations are also reviewed. Investments in sustaining and renewing the existing infrastructure and growth in provincial energy demands are also estimated. As a result, most provinces are planning to increase generation capacity through use of renewable sources like wind or solar energy. For those provinces using mainly coal, the generation mix will be determined in pending federal regulations. Moreover, several provinces have also had the foresight to consider potential smart grid investments to accommodate shifts in energy requirements. The report envisages investments of $293.8 billion in electricity infrastructure across Canada between 2010 and 2030.
