World Gold Conference to Address Sustainability Challenges as Prices Soar

Abstract
With gold prices reaching a 27 year high this week, it is clear that the industry is entering a period of sustained demand. Keeping pace with the commodities appetite from China and India presents both challenges and opportunities. For Australia, the world’s second largest exporter, the industry is worth between $5 billion and $6 billion annually. However, the last 10 years, have seen limited exploration success. The challenge for producers is to expand brownfields operations or revisit known deposits that were previously uneconomic whilst maintaining social, economic and environmental sustainability. Meeting this challenge depends largely on technical excellence. The first ever World Gold Conference 2007, to be held in Cairns from the 22-24 October, will bring together experts from the industry in order to advance best practice in the industry. The Conference is hosted by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM), in conjunction with the Canadian Institute of Metals (CIM) and the South African Mining Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM).
