Gabrielle ROY, I'un des meilleurs crivains canadiens d'aujourd'hui et attirant I'attention du lecteur frangais sur l'existence, d Qu6bec, d'une litt6rature d' expression frangaise extr6mement originale, a exprimd une ralit, en m0me temps archaiqueet dirigee vers le futur, proltarienne et conformiste, amricaine et pourtant conditionnde par la culnrre frangaise, entierement particulere l ce pays.Elle est la seule romancihre canadienne qui ait effectivement pu permettre un rapprochement des deux peuples, tant pour les critiques que le grand public.Le premier roman canadien-frangais, I' influence d'un Livre, remonte e 1837.Ce qui suivra, pendant cent ans, sera principalement 6difiant, didactique, agriculturiste et patriotique.L' analyse psychologique est I la fois stimulde et censurde par le rigorisme.Le roman rdaliste est dogmatiquement refusd par I'Eglise et I' institution litteraire.Les seuls vrais romans r6alistes sont ceux de Grignon (Un Homme et son P6ch6, 1933) et de Ringuet ( Trente Arpents, 1938).Aprds la guerre et I' industrialisation trbs rapide, Gabrielle ROY et Roger LEMELN, rdalistes plus libres, font un amdnagement de I' espace et du temps urbains.L' entrde de RogeTLEMELIN et de Gabrielle ROY dans da littdrature canadienne correspond d un moment bien prdcis de I' dvo lution collective d'une r6alit6 universelle.Depuis 1938, Gabrielle ROY s' est appliqude A perfectionner son criture, tr se libdrer d'un certain type de littrature facile et I dtablir de liens srieux avec la ralit.On peut distinguer dans la carridre de Gabrielle ROY trois grandes 6poques.La premibre p6riode va de Bonheur d' occasion (1945) a Alexandre
