Abstract
L’objet de cet article est de cerner, à travers le temps et l’espace, les moyens par lesquels les Premières Nations du Canada ont-elles été capable de s’approprier et d’adopter la religion catholique et ce, à travers le prisme du féminin. Après avoir montré que la spiritualité des congrégations religieuses actives sur le territoire canadien est essentiellement tournée vers les figures féminines du catholicisme, l’auteur met en évidence des points communs entre certaines pratiques rituelles traditionnelles et pratiques catholiques qui justifient que ces dévotions au féminin trouvent leur ancrage auprès des populations amérindiennes dès le XVIIe siècle. À travers le personnage de Catherine Tekakwhitha, amérindienne Mohawk ayant vécu dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle et canonisée en octobre 2012, on peut saisir les continuités modernes et contemporaines des dévotions amérindiennes et l’existence d’un lien particulier entre féminin et foi catholique amérindienne.
