Abstract
S’il est indéniable que les classes populaires contemporaines sont caractérisées par une hétérogénéité beaucoup plus forte que par le passé, il n’en demeure pas moins que cette diversité se dérobe pour partie aux tentatives de théorisation. Les travaux sociologiques semblent dès lors alterner entre descriptions empiriques et propositions de nouveaux paradigmes. Prenant au sérieux la troisième dimension de l’espace social (la trajectoire sociale) que Bourdieu avait proposée sans toutefois la mobiliser pour l’analyse des classes populaires, nous défendons ici l’idée suivant laquelle la mobilisation de cette dimension s’impose autant pour l’analyse des classes populaires d’aujourd’hui que pour celle des classes moyennes d’hier.
