“Godo d’essere italiano” : Saverio Almatura tra letteratura e arti figurative del Risorgimento

L’intervento si pone l’obiettivo di analizzare lo scritto autobiografico del pittore Saverio Altamura (1896). Tra la fine dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento numerosi artisti, napoletani di nascita o d’adozione (Altamura era nato a Foggia, ma si era formato nella città partenopea), elaborano una serie di testi autobiografici, i quali risultano importanti per poter ricostruire le vicende culturali italiane all’altezza del XIX secolo (tra questi artisti ricordiamo, tra gli altri, Bernardo Celentano, Gioacchino Toma, Michele Cammarano, Domenico Morelli, Edoardo Dalbono). Nell’opera di Altamura, in particolar modo, gli interessi artistici si sovrappongono a quelli politici in un miscuglio nel quale grande importanza è affidata anche al tema amoroso. Trasporre sul piano letterario vicende avvenute decenni prima rispetto al tempo della scrittura significa, però, anche ripensare in maniera critica a quelle vicende. Nell’ultimo capitolo dell’autobiografia Altamura torna con la mente alla rivolta napoletana del 15 maggio 1848, alla quale egli aveva partecipato. Un dubbio lacera la coscienza dell’anziano artista. È il dubbio di aver generato la morte di due contadini che cercavano di abbattere la barricata di Largo Carità. Una macchia cruenta, così, finisce per imbrattare la tela del racconto risorgimentale disegnata con la penna dal pittore meridionale.
