Abstract

Two recent railroad bridge projects show how special care needs to be taken to ensure they perform safely and up to standards for a long time. The first is the repair of a swing span bridge built over the Mississippi in 1901 and now part of Canadian Pacific. Years of short- term solutions had caused major decay in critical components brought on by constant pressure from river currents and increased traffic loads. The span needed to be jacked up and re-aligned before components were replaced and concrete work done on its supports. A new bridge for the AirTrain, the light-rail system at JFK International, is using state of the art materials to make it resistant to weather and temperature changes. It includes 10 passenger stations served by 32 AirTrain vehicles on 8.4 miles of track.
