A leitura de livros no contexto escolar é hoje uma prática corrente – mas quais são as condições nas quais os professores procedem à escolha dos livros e das atividades relacionadas às leituras? Este artigo apresenta um retrato da situação nas escolas do Québec, única província francófona do Canadá. Os dados apresentados provêm de uma vasta enquete realizada junto a mais de seiscentos professores dos últimos ciclos da escola primária (Fundamental I) e dos dois ciclos do ensino secundário (Fundamental II). Como as instruções oficiais do ministério são pouco restritivas, as obras escolhidas variam enormemente de uma escola para outra, o que não permite supor a construção de uma base de cultura comum mediante a leitura das mesmas obras por todos os alunos da província. Enfim, as atividades propostas para as leituras são ainda pouco inovadoras, em particular no ensino secundário.
