Abstract
On connaît très peu le comportement démographique des personnes nées à l'étranger vivant au Canada, et encore moins leur comportement migratoire. Pourtant, compte tenu du très bas niveau actuel de la fécondité et des récentes hausses des quotas d'immigration, la proportion de personnes nées à l'étranger pourrait bien augmenter dans un avenir rapproché. Dès lors, il paraît important de mieux connaître les comportements démographiques de cette population. Cet article analyse la distribution spatiale ainsi que la migration interprovinciale des personnes nées à l'étranger vivant au Canada. Les données du recensement de 1986 sont utilisées. L'accent est mis sur les différences entre le comportement migratoire des personnes nées au Canada et celui des personnes nées à l'étranger. La migration nette et les probabilités de migrer selon l'origine et la destination sont présentées pour différents groupes de population, selon la région de naissance. Finalement, des tables de survie multirégionales sont utilisées pour évaluer l'effet de ces différences migratoires sur la rétention exercée par les différentes régions.
