Abstract
This paper is a personal reflection on diversity as promoted through the Canadian policy of multiculturalism, with a particular focus on the song and dance aspect of multiculturalism. It argues that while multiculturalism encourages cultural diversity, it correspondingly seeks to contain it. It is a personal narrative of an Indian classical and contemporary dancer in Canada that is intimately connected to some of the goals of multiculturalism while still being wary of its consequences. It is a comment on the way in which multiculturalism has partially furthered artistic appreciation in Canada and yet, the necessary categorization that this celebration of difference entails fetishizes and essentializes cultural difference
