Abstract
Social class in the broadest sense is defined by whether one owns or controls the means of production or is forced to labor for those who do, along with resulting class and social struggles between these groups. Class and class struggle create the social and historical contexts in which sexual identities are formed. Sexual identities are the socially available ways in which people make sense of their sexual practices and identifications. Class interacts with sexual identity formation in how class differences themselves come to be eroticized; in the ways in which particular sexual practices and identifications have been associated with particular classes; in the ways in which struggles over sexual regulation have become part of class struggles; and in the ways in which capitalist class relations have helped to produce the basis for the emergence of homosexual, lesbian and heterosexual identifications.
