Abstract
L’art, on le sait, joue un rôle prépondérant dans l’édification des mythes d’une culture. L’image, dans sa forme iconographique, en re-présentant le réel, le charge d’une puissance symbolique. La dimension signifiante qu’acquiert alors l’objet reproduit l’érige en mythe, entendu dans son acception la plus restreinte, celle d’un signe qui cristallise des croyances et des pratiques sociales. Les séries de peintures de castes qui apparaissent au Mexique au XVIIIe siècle constituent une véritable parenthèse dans l’art colonial, qui avait jusque-là laissé bien peu de place aux thèmes profanes et pittoresques. En prenant pour sujet la dimension la plus intime des contacts qui s’établissent à partir de 1492 entre l’Europe, l’Amérique et l’Afrique – les unions d’êtres aux origines diverses – les œuvres donnent le premier rôle à ceux qui pendant longtemps étaient restés en marge du système de représentation : les métis. C’est ce passage « d’une existence fermée, muette, à un état oral, ouvert à l’appropriation de la société », formulé par Roland Barthes dans ses Mythologies (1957), qui servira de fil conducteur à notre réflexion.
