Abstract
In 1959, Jean-Paul Desbiens published anonymously in Le Devoir. a first letter which dealt with the general state of education in Québec. Appearing with the signature « Frère Un Tel » (Brother anybody) added by the newspaper’s editors, this letter was soon followed by several others by the same author. This series of missives, published in a volume in 1960, would turn out to be the motor for the « Révolution tranquille » (The tranquil revolution). Although these Insolences du Frère Untel (The insolent writings of brother anybody) have become an undeniable monument of Québecois literature, they have not been studied from the perspective of the author’s signature. And yet, throughout the writing process, a dialogue between the writing subject’s « I » and the collective « we » occurs, drawing the author continually toward the latter of the two terms. Our aim is to analyze examples of this back-and-forth movement with respect to the trajectory of the writer Jean-Paul Desbiens.
