Abstract
Cet article de synthèse porte sur les mesures actuellement utilisées pour décrire l'état de santé des populations. Il met l'accent sur la contribution du Québec au développement de tels indices en abordant les points suivants : le développement des espérances de vie en santé; les différentes théories sur l'évolution de l'état de santé des populations et sur la longévité de l'espèce humaine; le rôle du Québec dans l'harmonisation internationale des espérances de santé; et les premiers résultats apportés par la constitution de séries chronologiques d'espérances de santé. Une annexe est réservée aux manuels consacrés aux indicateurs démographiques, dont le Québec s'est fait une spécialité.
