Abstract
The expression of the historic and cultural identity of the immigrants is considered an aspect of great importance to take into account for the teachers of English as a second language. In correspondence, an epistemological analysis of the terms: Identity, culture, cultural identity and historic identity is made in this article based on the ethnic Chinese Canadian literature, and it is demonstrated how language constitutes a powerful means of performance of the identity of the immigrants as social group. As a result it is corroborated the fact that discourse analysis constitutes an essential element in the acquisition of a foreign language.
