Abstract
From: Dean Garland To: University College Ecology Department listserv Greetings all, With the fall semester only days away (where did summer go?), I wanted to take a moment to introduce the newest members of the Biological Sciences team. Expansion of the department has enabled us to take on several new hires (seven!) and we expect a difficult adjustment period to the new systems the administration has imposed. I'll address those issues during our staff meeting on Monday. As those of you on the search committee can attest, we are excited about our newest hires, who represent the cutting edge of specialties across the ecological spectrum. Without further ado, in alphabetical order: Dr Barnard's research has focused on the environmental ramifications of recent transpolar commercial shipping through the former Arctic ice cap. Recently, her work has focused on the impact of ship-facilitated mussel and barnacle transfer between the Northern Pacific and North Sea ecosystems. Dr Buttrick-Sarratt is a joint hire with the College's Economics Department. Her research focuses on quantifying biospheric and ecosystem value for use in conservation strategies and resource harvesting. Dr Buttrick-Sarratt's research aims to provide hard numbers for the intrinsic and economic value of existing ecosystems; such data have proven to be vitally necessary in provoking legislative intervention as of late. Dr Furman is the world's authority on neo-tidal communities of the Caribbean. His latest research has focused on behavioral changes of the green sea turtle to loss of nesting beaches from rising ocean levels. Dr Furman recently received an NSF grant to study marine organism responses to the newly constructed New Miami seawall off the Florida coast. The wall, for those who are unaware, is nearly 20 feet tall and has been an issue of contention between politicians and conservationists for the past several years. Dr Rand has been studying succession patterns of boreal flowering plants in the post-tundra of Canada's Nunavut province for the past 6 years. His recent study of latitudinal correlations and wildflower range expansion was published in the December 2064 issue of Ecology. Dr Rand's other research interests include climate-driven pollination symbiosis adjustments, and conservation of E callitrix (Arctic cottongrass). Dr Stevenson studies the behavioral impacts of poaching-prevention drones on the large mammal populations they monitor. Dr Stevenson has spent the past several years in South Africa, analyzing the movement patterns of African elephant herds under surveillance by the country's conservation departments. Her previous studies showing decreased fecundity of monitored brown bear populations in Siberia were published in Nature last May. Dr Tolman recently returned from a residency in Pyongyang, in the former People's Republic of North Korea, where he studied ecosystem resilience to nuclear conflict during the North Korean War of the 2040s. Dr Tolman holds the honor of being one of the first scientists to lead environmental recovery efforts in the war-torn region. Dr Tolman aims to make the region's ecosystem stable enough to facilitate large-scale agriculture again by the turn of the century, an effort we can all applaud, regardless of our opinions on the war's legitimacy. Dr Wilson's research focuses on the creation and maintenance of wildlife corridors in the face of continued urban sprawl in the western United States. Dr Wilson was a major voice behind the establishment of the Grand Canyon–Yellowstone Initiative, which aims to connect the two national parks through corridors of federally protected space. Her research has also addressed environmental stresses placed on the mountain lion population of Camelback Mountain in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, an area of nearly 8.5 million people according to the 2060 US Census.
