Abstract
In the space of just over a quarter of a century Bendigo had grown from a canvas diggings town to major mining centre. The new divisions of wealth and power created by the quartz boom of the 1870s challenged old political allegiances, and these differences surfaced dramatically during the constitutional crises of the late 1870s and were exacerbated by bitter industrial conflict in 1879. Yet the differences that were now apparent had been working their way to the surface for over two decades, and they were shaped by both changes in the local mining industry and social structure, and by colonial wide political developments. This paper will examine the first two and half decades of Victorian politics through a study of the gold mining city of Bendigo.
