Abstract
Although Elizabeth Brentnall's story parallels dramatically the narrative of first wave feminism in Australia, and has been awaiting a narrator for 100 years, she is almost completely missing from the historiography. If remembered at all, it is only as the first president of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in Queensland. At various times a headmistress and then a parson's wife, Elizabeth Brentnall (nee Watson) was one of Queensland's most important philanthropists and suffragists for over a quarter of a century from 1882 to1909.
