Abstract
In November 2000, the container vessel Bunga Teratai Satu ran aground on Sudbury Reef, approximately 40 km east of Cairns where it remained aground for 13 days before being refloated. In July 2002, the bulk carrier Doric Chariot ran aground on Piper Reef, 600km north of Cairns and was refloated eight days later. This paper outlines the environmental impact assessment and management undertaken during and after the refloating of the two vessels and the planning and implementation of remediation works at the two sites (including a novel approach to underwater remediation work). Conclusions relevant to ship groundings are discussed, such as the expectation for remediation to be undertaken, impacts caused and effectiveness of remediation.
