L’American Psychiatric Association et l’Association des psychiatres du Canada conviennent que l’echange sans condition d’information concernant l’aide de la police pour des problemes de sante mentale soupconnes avec le Centre d’information de la police canadienne (CIPC) menace le droit au respect de la vie privee du patient. En outre, la distribution subsequente de ces dossiers aux autorites frontalieres americaines sans examen ou lignes directrices peut entrainer la discrimination fondee sur la maladie mentale. Il est imperatif que des criteres soient etablis afin de guider les agences canadiennes dans l’utilisation des donnees du CIPC, et de conseiller les services de police canadiens dans la gestion des renseignements medicaux de nature delicate, de sorte que la confidentialite des dossiers medicaux soit protegee.
