Les classes moyennes, en France, sont affectées par un déclassement (ressenti et observé) en ce qui concerne le logement. Ce sont les strates inférieures des classes moyennes, quelles que soient les définitions et délimitations retenues, qui rencontrent le plus de difficultés, se rapprochant des catégories les moins favorisées. Dans l’ensemble, les mécanismes sociofiscaux ne leur sont pas favorables : les aides au logement vont d’abord aux moins favorisés, les dépenses fiscales bénéficient aux mieux lotis. Alors qu’historiquement la politique française du logement a plutôt visé les classes moyennes, celles-ci sont désormais relativement de côté par rapport, d’une part, aux ménages les plus pauvres et, d’autre part, aux investisseurs plus aisés. Sans qu’il soit possible de décalquer la question des classes moyennes sur celle de la périurbanisation, il apparaît que l’éclatement structurel des classes moyennes se double de l’émiettement des territoires. Cet article, reposant sur la diversité des perspectives et des données, constitue une synthèse autour d’un sujet très débattu en France, qu’il s’agisse des définitions, des évolutions, des habitations et des localisations des classes moyennes.
