Dans une réflexion sur la synonymie, la question du sens attribuable aux suffixes fait l’objet de débats. On considère habituellement que leur concurrence pour une même opération catégorielle et le rôle de l’usage, dans son arbitrarité, pour déterminer la forme du dérivé, manifestent leur indifférenciation sémantique. Cette position paraît confirmée par la réception des néologismes issus d’un changement de suffixe. Taxées de barbarismes par le public, ces créations sont rejetées au nom de leur inutilité et de l’ignorance qu’elles manifesteraient. Michel Arrivé a ainsi suivi en son temps l’accueil du célèbre bravitude de Ségolène Royal. Le goût de l’épilinguistique développé dans les médias après bravitude est à la source de créations ludiques ultérieures. Une chanson mise en ligne en 2011, « La Tristitude », s’emploie à définir le nouveau concept en décomposant ses éléments de formation. Une spécificité du suffixe - (i) tude par le sens autant que par la forme s’y dessine à travers les associations mémorielles entre substantifs concernés et la prise en compte de valeurs aspectuelles de l’affixe. La prégnance sémantique du substantif attitude dans un mode de formation néologique proche du mot-valise ajoute sa valeur propre. Cette différenciation sémantique de tristitude par rapport à tristesse n’est pas pour autant le gage de son adoption, strictement cantonnée pour l’instant à la connivence autour de la chanson.
