Abstract
Ce mémoire traite de l'industrie du bois dans la vallée de l'Outaouais, une région du Canada entre 1800 et 1920. Cette vallée est coupée en deux par un très grand axe navigable, la rivière des Outaouais, qui est la frontière entre le Canada francophone et le Canada anglophone, depuis l'arrivée de colons de langue anglaise. Sur la rive nord, on retrouve désormais la ville de Gatineau, troisième pôle démographique du Québec. Sur la rive sud, Ottawa, capitale du Canada. Jamais la vallée de l'Outaouais n'a été envisagée comme unie, la rivière jouant toujours le rôle de délimitation. Je vais donc m'intéresser à ce qui a constitué une grande partie de l'histoire de la région, l'industrie du bois, et plus particulièrement celle qui se retrouvait à l'emplacement actuel des secteurs Hull et Gatineau de la ville de Gatineau, sous différents aspects : développement, production, technique. Et cela toujours dans une perspective oppositive et comparative avec l'industrie du bois sur la rive sud et d'inscription dans un contexte régional, national et international.
