Abstract
An examination of non-fiction prose written by Canadian half-Mohawk writer, Pauline Johnson. Johnson used her Mohawk identity to create a writing and performance career. Though these performances often involved embodying typical Indian stereotypes, Johnson was able to use her posistion as a public speaker to challenge negative assumptions about the Iroquois nation. She also used her knowledge of Iroquois political structure to challenge the Canadian patriarchal political system.
