Abstract
Abstract The Nile delta, also called Lower Egypt, owes its name to the Greek letter delta (Δ), which was metaphorically used by the Greeks to designate the region because of the triangular shape it takes when looked upon from the sea. The region corresponds to the northern part of Egypt, where the Nile splits into several branches. It covers the largest fertile area of Egypt and hosts what was the most densely populated and diverse city in the ancient eastern Mediterranean: Alexandria. For over five millennia, the delta has acted as a dynamic cultural, economic, and political crossroads between East Africa, the Near East, and the Mediterranean.
