Abstract
En 2005, pour pallier à un manque, la Ville de Besançon se met en quête d’une plus grande notoriété, en la problématisant à partir de la question patrimoniale et plus particulièrement du « patrimoine Vauban ». En effet, sous le règne de Louis XIV, Vauban, architecte du roi, dote la Franche Comté, province devenue frontière, d’un appareil militaire imposant avec la construction de nouveaux remparts et l’érection d’une citadelle. Pour instituer ce patrimoine, le choix du media de la reconnaissance se porte sur l’Unesco et sur son label moralement prestigieux. Il s’agit ici de décrire les dispositifs de réponse patrimoniale à la construction d’une reconnaissance, avec tout ce qu’ils comptent d’hésitations et d’accommodements sur la façon dont on peut construire et classer « Vauban », ainsi que de résistances. Tour à tour il faudra construire des publics, doter l’objet patrimonial de qualités et lui en retirer d’autres, faire face à d’autres opérations de qualification du site et du personnage. Dans ce concert, peu à peu se manifestent, par défection ou prise de parole, des désaccords, ceux des tenants du maréchal comme « précurseur des lumières » ou ceux de « l’identité comtoise ». Reste un grand silence, celui des derniers occupants des casemates construites par Vauban, des migrants d’Afrique du Nord dans les années cinquante, qui auraient pu prétendre à un quatrième registre patrimonial.
