Abstract
ABSTRACT. Analysis of birds banded abroad and recovered in Brazil from 1927 to 2006 . Bird migration has been well studied, however many species and populations are still poorly known in their wintering sites. This knowledge gap highlights the importance on raising information about migratory birds in South America. This study describes the banding recovery data of 1714 birds recovered in Brazil and banded in other countries from 1927 to 2006, included in 41 species from the orders Charadriiformes, Procellariiformes, Falconiformes, Passeriformes, Anseriformes and Cuculiformes. These banding recovery data were provided by the Bird Banding Laboratory (USA), the Centro de Estudo de Migracoes e Proteccao de Aves (Portugal), the Oficina de Especies Migratorias (Espanha) and the British Trust for Ornithology (United Kingdom). The birds recovered in Brazil came from North America, United Kingdom, North Atlantic Islands, Antarctica, and South Atlantic Islands. The majority of these individuals was banded in Northeastern and Central USA and Canada (including the Great Lakes region) and in the border of these countries. Most of the birds were recovered in the Brazilian coast, as well as in the Amazonian Basin and Southeastern Brazil. The Common Tern Sterna hirundo and Manx Shearwater Puffinus puffinus were the most recovered species. Four endangered species were also recovered in Brazilian sites (Black-browed Albatross Thalassarche melanophris, Yellow-nosed Albatross T. chlororhynchos, Wandering Albatross Diomedea exulans and Southern Giant-Petrel Macronectes giganteus). The banding and recovery details of species with ten or more registers were presented here, as well as other information from these data, as age and time of recovery. Studies like this can help to point important areas for bird conservation in Brazil. KEY WORDS. Migratory birds, migratory patterns, differential migration, banding, South America. RESUMO. O grande volume de estudos sobre migracoes de aves ainda nao supre o conhecimento necessario para sua conservacao, com muitas especies e populacoes ainda correndo riscos em seus locais de reproducao e principalmente nas areas de invernada. A pouca informacao existente sobre os movimentos das especies ocorrentes na America do Sul evidenciam a importância do levantamento de informacoes sobre as especies migratorias. Neste estudo foram analisados os dados de anilhamento e recuperacao de 1714 individuos anilhados no exterior e recuperados no Brasil entre 1927 e 2006, pertencentes a 41 especies, incluidas nas ordens Charadriiformes, Procellariiformes, Falconiformes, Passeriformes, Anseriformes e Cuculiformes. Os dados foram disponibilizados pelo Bird Banding Laboratory (USA), pelo Centro de Estudo de Migracoes e Proteccao de Aves (Portugal), pela Oficina de Especies Migratorias (Espanha) e pelo British Trust for Ornithology (Reino Unido). As recuperacoes foram provenientes de individuos marcados na America do Norte, Reino Unido, Ilhas do Atlântico Norte, Antartica e Ilhas do Atlântico Sul, sendo a maioria das aves marcadas na costa Noroeste e na regiao central dos EUA e Canada (grandes lagos), acompanhando a fronteira destes dois paises. As localidades de recuperacao no Brasil foram predominantemente costeiras e no interior das regioes amazonica e sudeste. As especies Sterna hirundo e Puffinus puffinus foram as mais recuperadas. Tambem foram recuperadas quatro especies ameacadas globalmente (Thalassarche melanophris, T. chlororhynchos, Diomedea exulans e Macronectes giganteus). As marcacoes e recuperacoes das especies com 10 ou mais registros foram descritas e mapeadas. Foram tambem apresentadas e discutidas outras informacoes relacionadas a estes dados, como idade dos individuos e tempo de recuperacao. Estudos com este enfoque podem auxiliar no mapeamento de areas importantes para conservacao de aves no Brasil. PALAVRAS-CHAVE.
