Abstract
Since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 and the recent establishment of a powersharing executive in Northern Ireland, there has been an emphasis on 'parity of esteem' between the Nationalist and Orange-Unionist traditions. Orange archivists now work with scholars in providing information. Orange histories have recently appeared which explore the movement's overseas links in Canada and Australasia. Recent articles and theses have analysed Orangeism in New Zealand and on the Australian mainland, but Tasmania has been mostly omitted. While many writers have examined Tasmania's links with Irish Nationalism, the rival tradition has gone by default. This is remarkable when New Zealand, also temperate in climate with a similar image as the United Kingdom's 'dutiful daughter' and sharing with Tasmania a larger Protestant majority than the other Australian states, had an active Orange presence.
