Questionnés sur leurs connaissances factuelles de l'économie, les Québécois obtiennent un taux de bonne réponse d'environ 33 %. Cette performance n'est pas différente de celle mesurée aux États-Unis dans des études comparables. Les Québécois sont pourtant nombreux à désirer mieux connaître et comprendre leur économie alors que près de 84 % des répondants à une enquête se déclaraient personnellement intéressés à regarder une émission de télévision qui aurait pour objectif d'expliquer la manière dont fonctionne l'économie. La télévision est la principale source d'information sur l'économie pour 88 % des répondants. Selon les auteurs de l'étude « Les Québécois et les rouages de l'économie québécoise », Jim Engle-Warnick et Claude Montmarquette : « Il y a une volonté chez les Québécois de connaître davantage les rouages de leur économie, mais l'acquisition de ces connaissances n'est pas aisée. Des efforts d'information et d'éducation économique devront être faits. » Cette enquête se distingue d'un sondage régulier sur les connaissances économiques parce qu'elle tente d'identifier par diverses méthodes statistiques les facteurs déterminants à l'accumulation de connaissances sur l'économie québécoise et à la demande pour de l'information économique.
