New Technologies, Charisma and Transnationalism Among Young Congolese Pentecostals: Creative Ways to Participate in Civic Local Societies

Abstract
This paper is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted among young Congolese Pentecostals based in Montreal (Canada). Research shows that their religious sense of belonging and religious practices extend the social frontiers of their congregation. By means of various strategies, including recourse to new technologies and the mobilization of religious charisma, they frame their everyday religiosities within a transnational lifestyle that allows them access to new social capital. While the latter impacts on their relationship to local citizenship, it does not impede them from becoming engaged in the public sphere. The religious agenda that motivates their activism sheds new light on the concept of civil society.
