Abstract
Cet article présente un panorama du coût individuel des études pour l'étudiant ainsi que des mécanismes d'accompagnements mis en oeuvre en Angleterre, au Canada, aux États-Unis, en France et en Australie. Dans un premier temps attachons à décrire ces différentes formes de financement. Nous en dessinons une typologie en fonction des principales caractéristiques de chaque système (frais de scolarité, prêts étudiants, aides, taux d'accès à l'enseignement secondaire, ...). Dans un second temps, nous dégageons des enseignements de ces expériences nationales en termes d'impact sur le taux de fréquentation dans l'enseignement supérieur. Pour cela nous nous appuyons sur la littérature existante et sur l'utilisation d'un modèle économétrique original. Nous mettons en évidence que le taux d'accès à l'enseignement dépend du niveau des frais d'inscription dans une moindre mesure, mais également d'une composante structurelle liée à la zone géographique dans une plus large mesure. Enfin nous mettons en évidence l'impact négatif des frais d'inscription sur certaines classes sociales dans la population.
